NICU Shirts

A friend had a baby recently that needs to spend some unexpected time in the NICU.  Not really knowing much info, I felt desperate to do something to help.
I thought that some kind of shirt with lots of snaps might be useful.
I used my baby hat pattern to make some matching hats.
The shirts are reversible and have snaps on the front and at the shoulders.
We've been fortunate and none of my kids have ever spent any time in the NICU, so I don't know if these are helpful or not.  Nonetheless, I'm sure they will be appreciated.

  1. My son spent some time in the Nicu, and the nicu suggested we give him a snoodle. It's a snuggly thing that mom or dad sleeps with and then it's placed near them in their bed. It's not something you can do at home but during 24 hour monitoring, it's okay. I don't know if you have the energy, but that's something else to do. Many of our friends brought us lunch or dinner, which wad much appreciated. Hospital food is the worst.

  2. Hope the baby is doing well! I think these shirts are very useful for a newborn, specially for the first one, can ease the process for the new mom. Your friend will appreciate this so much! God bless you!

  3. These are amazing. My baby was in the NICU for 2 months (she is fine now!), and wore a tiny vest in her incubator. Often clothing gets in the way of all of the wires and tubes, so the vests are perfect. Your friend will really appreciate these. She can probably donate them when her baby has outgrown them. Food for the family is a great idea too. Nothing better than a full freezer when you come home (or healthy snacks to throw in your hospital visiting bag). You are a good friend!

  4. I wonder if using soft sew on Velcro might be easier for the nurses than the snaps.

  5. I have a baby in the NICU right now, and these shirts look wonderful. The snaps are great for easy access. The comment about Velcro is a good idea for easy access, but it tends to stick to many medical supplies like gauze and mesh bandages, and can make quite a mess! Another good NICU idea is crib blankets or quilts. My daughter has received a few from Project Linus which donates handmade blankets to our local children's hospital.
