Serged Fabric Napkins and Some News

First, the fun news.  There's a new sewing studio opening up nearby and I've been asked to teach a serger workshop.  Beehive Sewing is a cool new concept.  They provide all the tools you need, you bring the fabric and ideas and get to work.

I get to play with this amazing Babylock serger, which is making my old Janome nervous that it may get replaced soon.

Teaching on this machine almost feels like cheating since threading is unbelievably easy and switching between regular stitching and rolled hem is as easy as turning a knob and removing a needle.

I was looking for an easy project for the class that would have broad appeal.  My ideas generally relate to kids and babies, which might not appeal to everyone, so my super-smart sister suggested fabric napkins.
I sifted through my scrap bin and whipped up a couple.  I LOVE the way these turned out.  So simple, yet so beautiful and practical.  And really doable for a beginner.
I'd love some suggestions.  What would you like to see in a beginner serger class?

  2. Nancy Zieman has a lot of great serging projects that even a beginner could handle.

  3. These are lovely! I would add something with stretch fabric if you can, it's what most people are scared of when using a serger I think? They could do a knit scarf with serged edges or something?

  5. Is there any way to put the lessons online? I got a serger for Christmas and still haven't touched it out of fear. Sigh.

    1. I would love to, but this lesson is specific to the studio's Babylock model. All sergers are a little different. What machine do you have? I can definitely do a post on some serger basics though.

  9. I took a beginning serger class last year, and I was able to make a tote bag with a simple quilt block in the middle, and a long sleeved shirt with knit fabric. Both were so much more simple than I thought they would be! And I had enough confidence that I came home and started using my own serger!

  10. I might have to whip over there and take your class, Ruby, I have never used a serger!! How exciting is it to be asked to teach a class! That is one of my goals. I think I might love to teach a bag making class at a local quilt shop in Alberta. How exciting! Janelle
